Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
